NIEDERREITER

The Beginning

Nino Niederreiter’s dream of becoming a pro hockey player started at the young age of 5. He grew up in a small city located in the Alps of Switzerland and had much support from his family which includes his parents and two older sisters Romina and Lorena. After playing in the juniors division with the EHC Chur in his hometown, Niederreiter was drafted in the season 2006-07 to the junior team of the Swiss National League A Team HC Davos. In the same season he won the Swiss championships. Because of his ambition and talent Niederreiter was drafted to the North American junior league WHL team Portland Winterhawks at age 16.

Breakthrough

Niederreiter was drafted 5th overall in the 2010 drafts to the New York Islanders. Niederreiter scored his first NHL goal and wrote history as youngest scorer at age 18 for the Islanders. In the following season 2011-12 and back at the Islanders team, Niederreiter was left with injuries and finished the season with the AHL Team Bridgeport Sound Tigers. An unexpected trade in summer 2013 to the Minnesota Wild team brought Niederreiter back to the NHL. At the end of the second season (2014-15) for the Wilds, Nino Niederreiter is second-best scorer of his team and the first Swiss NHL player who shot a hat trick. Since 2010, Niederreiter had played for the Swiss National Team and won the silver medal at the IIHF Word Championships 2013.
